Netflix does not show IMDB ratings in its interface. Their algorithm promotes content based on what keeps you subscribed, not necessarily what is highest quality. A movie can sit at the top of your Netflix homepage for weeks even if it scored 4.2 out of 10. Netflix wants you to click, not to be satisfied with what you clicked on.
An IMDB score gives you a crowd-sourced quality check from millions of viewers worldwide. A movie rated 7.5 or higher is almost always worth watching. Between 6.0 and 7.5 it depends on your taste and the genre. Below 5.0, you are probably better off picking something else. These numbers save you from wasting two hours on a movie that looked good in the trailer but falls apart in the second act.
Rotten Tomatoes adds a different perspective. The Tomatometer tells you what percentage of professional critics gave a positive review, while the audience score reflects regular viewers. When both scores are high — say 90% critics and 85% audience — you have found something genuinely special. When they diverge wildly, that is interesting too: it usually means the movie is polarizing, which can be exactly what you are in the mood for.
